About Simon

Simon commenced his vocal studies with Paul Deegan and Colette Mc Gahon at the Royal Irish Academy of Music where he held the highest scholarship honours. He has performed at Master classes given by Philip Langridge and Malcolm Martineau amongst others.Since returning from studying under Alan Watt at the Opera School in the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, he has been studying with Frank O’Brien.

His Operatic roles include Ipparco in L’Egisto by Cavalli, Cox in Sullivan’s Cox and Box, and Belcore (Cosi Fan Tutte, under Laurent Wagner) at the National Concert Hall; Silvio in Pagliacci with Wonderland Productions. He has done extended highlights, with the Opera in The Open Series, the roles of Danilo in The Merry Widow, Marcello in La Boheme, Melisso in Alcina, Orestes in Iphegenie in Tauride, Guglielmo in Cosi Fan Tutte, Marcello in La Boheme, High Priest and Hercules in Alceste, Silvio and Tonio in Pagliaci, Scarpia in Tosca and Eugene Onegin in Eugene Onegin. He will perform the role of Marcello with Loughcrew Opera in association with Opera Ireland at the end of May.

He has performed with orchestra, as a Bass soloist, in Ireland and the UK, Schubert and Haydn Masses, Bach’s B Minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, and various Cantatas, The Mozart Requiem, Saint-Saens Oratorio De Noel, the Chitchester Psalms by Bernstein and the Baritone Solo in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

He has toured regularly with the Drawing Room Opera Company, performed with Opera Ireland in Boris Godonov, Aida, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, The Flying Dutchman, The Silver Tassie, and Carmen, (with Directors including Patrick Mason, and Calixto Bieito) has recorded extracts from Mirandolina by Bohuslav Martinu for Wexford Festival Opera, and has written and arranged music for RTE, the BBC, Placido Domingo, and The RTE Concert Orchestra, for whom he performed as guest soloist as part of the Lunchtime Choice Series at the NCH, broadcast live on Lyric Fm.

He toured China and Japan as a lead singer with Riverdance, performed at Dublins Gate Theatre the Role of Antony in their acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd (Winner of best Opera Production at the Irish Theatre Awards 2008). He has frequently toured as a singer in the US where he has received much critical acclaim and has two albums on release there.
